Probiotic Skin Care

Probiotic skin care makes use of good bacteria to maintain skin's microbiome – the ecosystem of bacteria in our bodies. Containing live cultures of "healthy" bacteria, these products serve a number of functions such as strengthening the skin barrier, preventing and soothing acne, maintaining skin's pH levels, firming and clarifying skin, and refining skin texture.

Unlike AHA, BHA or retinol which may cause hyper-photosensitivity or irritation, probiotics take a milder approach by supplying nutrients to skin and gradually improving its natural defense against free radicals and bad bacteria. Since probiotics are more symbiotic with the skin, they usually do not trigger irritations and are hence suitable for acne-prone and sensitive skin.

Probiotic skin care comes mostly as essences, ampoules and serums but can also include cleansers, toners and creams. Most probiotics in these products are obtained by fermentation, a process that also helps to make the nutrients in the ingredient easier to absorb into skin.

Bifidobacterium longum, lactobacillus and galactomyces are the most common probiotics in skin care. Secret Key's Starting Treatment Essence, for instance, is packed with galactomyces ferment filtrate. MISSHA's Time Revolution The First Essence 5X features bifida ferment lysate for anti-aging benefits, while NEOGEN's Probiotics Youth Repair Mist revitalizes skin with lactobacillus ferment lysate.

About Probiotic Skin Care & Benefits

What is probiotic skin care?

Probiotics are good bacteria beneficial to your health in multiple ways. Probiotic supplements are widely known to boost the immune system and gut health. Lately, scientific studies have also proven the benefits of probiotics on skin, so this ingredient’s use in beauty products is on an upward trend. Coming as cleansers, toners and moisturizers, probiotic skin care products contain live cultures of healthy bacteria that are either the same or similar to bacteria that already exist in our body.

What does probiotic skin care do?

Just like how probiotic supplements help improve the digestive system, topical probiotics help fend off free radicals and bad bacteria to maintain skin’s microbiome – the ecosystem of bacteria in our body. Probiotic skin care helps strengthen the skin barrier, prevent acne, reduce inflammation, maintain skin’s pH levels, boost skin elasticity and refine its appearance. The effects of each type of good bacteria vary from species to species. Formulation concentration, processing method (such as fermentation) and combination with other ingredients may also affect the performance of probiotics in skin care.

Why use probiotic skin care?

Since probiotics are more symbiotic with the skin, they usually do not cause irritation or disrupt the skin’s natural bacterial environment. Unlike chemicals such as AHA or BHA that may strip away both good and bad substances from skin, probiotics have milder effects as they supplement skin with what it needs and gradually improve its natural defense against environmental aggressors.

What skin types would benefit from probiotic skin care?

Probiotic skin care is suitable for all skin types including oily, dry, combination, sensitive, acne-prone and mature skin types. Those with sensitive skin or fungal acne can benefit most from these products since they help calm skin and restore its microbiome equilibrium.

Which probiotics are best for skin?

Microorganisms (a.k.a. microbes) include both fungi and bacteria. Many fermented foods and drinks are rich in live microbes, such as kombucha, kimchi, pickles, natto, miso, yogurt, kefir, sourdough and certain cheeses, to name a few. We usually consume them without knowing what probiotics or yeasts they contain. When it comes to skin care, however, the probiotics used are usually specified in the ingredient list. Bifidobacterium longum, lactobacillus and galactomyces are some of the most commonly used probiotics in skin care.

Bifidobacterium longum, one of 32 species of bifidobacteria, can be found in the human gastrointestinal tract. It produces lactic acid which is believed to inhibit the growth of pathogens. Instead of just the bacteria itself, its ferment (called bifida ferment lysate) is usually used in skin care. Bifida ferment lysate is the key anti-aging ingredient in Estee Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair. It helps repair damaged skin, promote healthy skin and deliver hydrating and soothing effects.

Lactobacillus, which has over 260 species, is found in the human digestive and female genital systems. Lactobacillus plantarum derived from plants is one of the most common types of lactobacilli, and it's used in yogurt, cheese and dairy products. In skin care, this ingredient diminishes dark spots and acne scars at a concentration of 5% in the formulation. Like bifidobacterium longum, lactobacilli produce lactic acid, which helps protect your skin against pathogens while providing it with nutrients. Lactobacillus is usually present in skin care as lactobacillus ferment filtrate.

Galactomyces is a group of fungi grown during the sake brewing process. Studies have shown that galactomyces ferment filtrate helps exfoliate skin, refine pores, control sebum production, brighten dull skin and prevent acne. SK-II’s patented name for galactomyces ferment filtrate is Pitera, the star ingredient behind the brand’s signature Facial Treatment Essence. Each bottle contains over 90% Pitera.

What is the relationship between probiotics and fermentation?

Even though ferments are a major source of probiotics, not all ferments qualify as probiotics, and not all probiotics take the form of ferments. Some skin care ingredients are fermented for other reasons besides just probiotic benefits. Fermentation breaks down the molecular structure of ingredients, making nutrients more concentrated and easier to absorb. This process helps produce additional amino acids to stimulate collagen production as well as antioxidants to fight against premature aging. Most fermented products are acidic, which helps exfoliate skin.

Prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics: What are the differences?

Probiotic skin care products normally contain a mix of prebiotic, probiotic and postbiotic ingredients. Probiotics are the microbes that you'd like to colonize on your skin to promote overall skin health. Prebiotics, such as beta-glucan and xylitol, are compounds that feed probiotic microbes; they ensure the microbes function properly when applied onto skin. Postbiotics are by-products from the metabolism of the living bacteria. Even though they’re not active bacteria, postbiotics, which can include probiotic lysates, ferments, filtrates, hyaluronic acid, peptides, ceramides and vitamins, still perform similar functions as live bacteria.

Are probiotics vegan-friendly?

Probiotics made from fermentation of dairy products are not vegan. However, those made from kombucha, miso and non-dairy yogurt may be vegan. For example, Dr. Ceuracle’s Vegan Kombucha Tea Essence is formulated with 78% probiotic extracts from kombucha tea to balance skin’s oil-water levels, provide deep hydration, strengthen the skin barrier and boost skin health. The essence has a 15:85 oil-to-water ratio. The milky cream on top and clear brown essence at the bottom mix to form a milk tea-like solution.

Famous for using only essential ingredients in products, ONE THING offers a vegan-friendly Galactomyces Ferment Filtrate Toner packed with proteins, amino acids, vitamins and minerals to clarify skin. The brand’s vegan Bifida Ferment Lysate Essence is also rich in proteins, lactose, lactic acid and vitamins to rejuvenate skin.

Was ist probiotische Hautpflege?

Was bewirkt die probiotische Hautpflege?

Warum sollte man probiotische Hautpflege verwenden?

In Korea where fermented products like kimchi are regularly consumed, many people have embraced probiotic skin care, and probiotic skin care brands and lines are proliferating in the market.
